2.8 Confusion Drift
Bloated prompts do more than waste tokens — they also destabilize the model’s behavior. This problem is known as confusion drift.
When a prompt contains dozens of soft or trivial details without clear rules, the model is left with mixed signals. Because it is a pattern predictor, it tries to “average out” all of those inputs. The result is generic, inconsistent, or contradictory responses.
How Confusion Drift Appears

The bot starts strong, but after 10–15 turns its voice weakens or becomes bland.

Personality traits blur together (a shy bot suddenly becomes confident without reason).

Formatting rules are ignored or inconsistently applied.

Relationship cues stop carrying weight as generic filler overtakes directive signals.
Why It Happens
The model doesn’t weigh trivia and rules differently — every token counts the same in prediction. If you give it ten sharp behavioral rules and fifty lines of trivia, the trivia can drown out the rules. The model ends up predicting the “average” style, which often looks like generic chatbot speech.
Preventing Confusion Drift

Keep permanent text lean. Every sentence should encode behavior or formatting, not backstory.

Confusion drift worsens the longer a chat goes. Weak signals get diluted further with each new turn. A lean, directive prompt not only starts stronger but also stays stable longer.

Confusion drift is not caused by the model being “dumb.” It is caused by the prompt being noisy. The sharper your cues, the less room there is for the model to drift into generic behavior.
